What happened to our stairs, squeaking like crazy!
Hello,
Bought a house earlier this year and in the house, we have a staircase to the second floor. The house was built in 1991. I sanded the staircase when we moved in, painted it with white panel lacquer, then a layer of transparent lacquer that was of high quality and supposed to be very hard to specifically protect the staircase. Finished it in the winter and everything was fine but now 3 months later it has started to creak a lot when we walk on it. What has happened, it was great in the winter and didn't make much sound at all?

Higher humidity is what has happened. The wood in the stairs has expanded because the air in the house has higher RH now, which is why it creaks now, it will likely be gone again around November-December.
Typical seasonal variations, in other words. However, it is absolutely possible to construct a wooden staircase that is creak-free year-round. Ours is, for example, 40 years old and never creaks!
