working on fixing up the stairs.
I have rather large gaps that need to be filled before I can putty and sand.
What should I ideally fill these with? There should be something better than lots of layers of regular putty.

It will never be possible to putty that, you'll have to cover it with plasterboard or something.

I thought it would be plan B if the plastering doesn't go well. It extends less if the plastering succeeds. If it doesn't work, then it will be a panel, and in that case, it doesn't matter that it's plastered underneath.

Is space really so limited that a 6mm gypsum board makes any practical difference? In my world, this is not even worth 2 seconds of thought...

Is there a wall that is removed?
what supports the stairs?

Maybe not, will probably use a board anyway.
Had hoped to avoid the hassle of bringing one home.

There was no wall that had any bearing function.

It became a disc, and after much sanding and painting, it turned out like this.

Nice! But I definitely think you removed the wall that the staircase stringer rested on. It only goes down to the window now :surprised:

Possibly it was like that a long time ago. I haven't removed it. It was a closet made of very thin material, which wasn't load-bearing in any way. It's been like that since the '70s, so it should hold for a while longer.

Alright, I see. Maybe it's hanging on all the planks you placed the board on.

The boards are indeed attached to the stairs, and they continue upwards to form the wall on the upper floor. Then I assume they are attached to the wall to the right of the window, and they are also set in the beams in the ceiling/floor on the upper floor.
