working on fixing up the stairs.
I have rather large gaps that need to be filled before I can putty and sand.
What should I ideally fill these with? There should be something better than lots of layers of regular putty.

I thought it would be plan B if the plastering doesn't go well. It extends less if the plastering succeeds. If it doesn't work, then it will be a panel, and in that case, it doesn't matter that it's plastered underneath.
Is space really so limited that a 6mm gypsum board makes any practical difference? In my world, this is not even worth 2 seconds of thought...M Mortsken said:
Possibly it was like that a long time ago. I haven't removed it. It was a closet made of very thin material, which wasn't load-bearing in any way. It's been like that since the '70s, so it should hold for a while longer.T Tompafix said:
The boards are indeed attached to the stairs, and they continue upwards to form the wall on the upper floor. Then I assume they are attached to the wall to the right of the window, and they are also set in the beams in the ceiling/floor on the upper floor.
