Hello!

We have torn down a closet in our old house from 1912. We also lifted a part of the floor and could see what was underneath. The room where the closet is located is on the second floor. What was under the floor looks like ash, gravel, coal, or something. There were also stones there! It was quite dusty and your hands turned black. However, not like charcoal but it was harder. Does anyone have any idea what it might be that they have put under the floor? ???

Hello!

I think I've found the answer myself. It's slag! Apparently, a common material that was used as insulation in the past. It seems to retain heat well.
