First post here, but I've been reading on the forum for almost half a year, well. I've cleared out the basement, and now only an old water heater remains. My father believes it is insulated with asbestos and considered bringing in a remediation company for dismantling. Now the question is whether that's true? To successfully remove this piece, I must split it in two and take it out in two parts (if not smaller).
My first post too...
The only way to know if it's asbestos or not is to submit a sample for analysis. Otherwise, you can make more or less qualified guesses based on the year of manufacture ...
As a private individual, it is not illegal to remove asbestos yourself, but if you're going to cut/saw/break it, it might not be recommended.
Probably it is not asbestos. You could possibly open up carefully at an edge to check. However, it is most likely asbestos in the pipe insulation. Sure, you CAN demolish it yourself as a private person, but it's not something I recommend.
Have now opened and checked what the tank is insulated with, which was just regular insulation. So it will be removed shortly. However, it's true that the pipes are asbestos insulated. If I'm right, it doesn't matter as long as I don't work on or break them? In a few places, you can see directly into the pipe insulation where the "protective fabric" is missing... maybe it can just be taped over? Is it safe to use such a room simply?
Asbestos is not dangerous; it's the asbestos dust that is dangerous...
As long as you don't poke and drill into things made of asbestos, it's completely safe! And that's not something you do daily!
