Well, now I'm not sure if this question fits here either, I've tried under Environment....but got no response....... Anyway, waste will soon be weighed in our area so we need to get a bit better at waste sorting. Has anyone built or arranged anything at home in a way that makes the sorting and storage of old smelly packages and such easier, and maybe it even becomes fun to sort waste?

I'm working on a "recycling bench" to place in the pantry. The tabletop will be a hobby board of appropriate length. Legs made from 45*45 timbers. Hobby board between the timbers on the sides and on the front a dowel and a two-part curtain in front. Probably, timbers will be needed at the bottom edge on the front and back for stability.

In the tabletop, I plan to saw three lids. Underneath, I'll screw a hook on each side of the lids. On the hooks, I'll hang plastic bags, one carrying handle on each hook.

Then the bench will be painted white, or in whatever color one prefers. I'm considering whitewashing the board and painting the rest of the bench white. For the curtain, you can use some snazzy fabric. Then a nice image of glass, tin can, and paper on the lids and voilà! a practical and stylish storage for recyclables.

If you have more space, you can make more lids or drill large holes in the tabletop to fit more things to sort.

I just need to finish the hallway, a bedroom, and fix the garden, then I can post a picture of how it turned out :)

Clearly interested in how it turns out! I was thinking of something bigger, maybe even outdoors.

I have a sunroom with a door leading out from the kitchen/dining room. Along one of the short sides (the glazing starts 90 cm above the floor on the short sides) I built a simple bench 140x50 cm and 80 cm high using cabinet framework, countertop, etc., that were left over when I tore out the old kitchen. The front is covered with a nice fabric. In the cabinet, I then collect everything in ordinary paper carrier bags, which you always get too many of. One for each of paper, cardboard, glass, metal, plastic, returnable bottles/cans. Beside it, an old ice cream container for batteries and light bulbs. When something is full, you just take the bag with you to the recycling station. If the bag is still intact and reasonably clean, you just fold it up; otherwise, you dump it in the recycling.

I don't understand those who spend money on fancy boxes. They have to be carried home and after a while, they easily get dirty and need to be washed.
