Hi!
Bought a house about 2 years ago.
I have an annoying support post and steel beam in the ceiling of my basement. I am renovating the basement now and would like to remove them (at least the support post).
I have removed the ceiling now and there are quite strong beams crossing the steel beam. From wall to wall, it is approximately 4.2 m.
My idea is to lay kottlar across the entire floor. It should relieve enough so I can remove the support post and beam (?)
Who can I contact and ask about my ideas? I had a guy from a construction company, he said it can probably be removed, but he can't promise anything. Where can I find a structural engineer or who should I ask?
As mentioned, you should consult a structural engineer.
With the span you mention, I believe the beams should be at least 190mm high, preferably 220mm. And that's assuming there is nothing load-bearing on the floor above.
In the picture, it's obviously difficult to see, but it looks to me like the beams are only 140 - 170mm high. In that case, a steel beam is needed. The column is harder to comment on, it looks a bit temporary, so I guess it has proven to be necessary.
The whole thing seems like an afterthought, likely because the floor has sagged or something similar.
The structural engineer should be able to suggest a solution for this, but I would assume it involves installing steel beams parallel to some of the floor joists and fastening them together.
