Hello. I've been working on building a garage for about three years now. It's a standard garage with a carport in front. I've chosen to insulate the loft above the carport. The entire structure has a basic framework in glulam. What I'm wondering now, as I insulate the loft, is how I should place the vapor barrier at the ridge beam. The ridge beam is 600mm and the insulation/roof rafters are 220mm. I want the remaining part of the ridge beam to be visible in the loft but don't want to have to wrap the exposed part of the ridge beam in plastic. Do I just end the vapor barrier at the ridge beam, or how should I do it?? :S
you should have done it like this. from bottom and up. beam- plastic over beam- board with the same width as beam- rafters. You simply place a strip (1m) over the beam during installation. then the plastic is protected and unbroken and ready for overlap/tape/clamping strip. now I would seal the plastic against the beam with a clamping strip on both sides.
OK. Yes, the correct thing would probably have been, as you say, to place the beam on top before the roof was laid. Sealant with clamp strip?? Any strip at all or do you use a special one?
you take an approved sealant, e.g., sicaflex, tec7, or similar, and apply a bead along the beam. then put the plastic on top and a clamping strip, around 11x36 or similar. don't focus too much on the dimensions as they are Norwegian and a bit different from what you find/split. good luck!
Thanks!
