Here is a picture of how I did it during the extension last summer. The electricity inside the vapor barrier, the thermal bridge broken, and no risk of puncturing the vapor barrier when mounting pictures, etc.

Did you use 45x45 horizontally or battens?

45x45. It matches well with 45-insulation and provides sufficient stability, as well as space for the electrical boxes.

Okay, I was thinking of using drywall given how expensive OSB has become. What is the best solution then?

Either cross batten the furring strips or add another layer of furring strips, vertical. osb/ ply under plasterboard without a doubt recommended.

Calculate the cost of all the timber and screws needed to install noggins and compare it with a layer of OSB. You need at least 45x70 for the noggings. Additionally, it's a very time-consuming task to install noggings. It is much faster to attach 45x45 horizontally, and it uses less material as well.

Having boards behind is very advantageous. But it doesn't have to be expensive OSB; I have used both chipboard or plywood of the absolute worst quality, buy the cheapest you can find. Some even use thin tongue and groove boards. It doesn't matter what's behind, as long as there's something that provides grip for screws when you want to hang things on the wall.

Rickard.
The installation layer that most people here advocate is of course a good method, especially for thick walls, but it's a relatively new method and it works to do it according to description #5 if you don't want to sacrifice living space.

If you're really paranoid, you can apply sealant (or any other option to seal) in the gap between the drywall and the box afterwards to make it airtight right there.

As others have written, put OSB or another board under the plasterboard.
