Calculate the cost of all the timber and screws needed to install noggins and compare it with a layer of OSB. You need at least 45x70 for the noggings. Additionally, it's a very time-consuming task to install noggings. It is much faster to attach 45x45 horizontally, and it uses less material as well.T Ejmelie said:
Having boards behind is very advantageous. But it doesn't have to be expensive OSB; I have used both chipboard or plywood of the absolute worst quality, buy the cheapest you can find. Some even use thin tongue and groove boards. It doesn't matter what's behind, as long as there's something that provides grip for screws when you want to hang things on the wall.

The installation layer that most people here advocate is of course a good method, especially for thick walls, but it's a relatively new method and it works to do it according to description #5 if you don't want to sacrifice living space.
If you're really paranoid, you can apply sealant (or any other option to seal) in the gap between the drywall and the box afterwards to make it airtight right there.
