We have recently moved into an apartment, and I'm quite unfamiliar with securing things in drywall. We managed to put up a shelf/cabinet yesterday with a toggle bolt (which I at least hope is secure and worked as it should). That wall only had the drywall and then a hollow space.
Today I tried to put up two more cabinets, only to realize that the wall is different after drilling four 10Ø holes. It's drywall, hollow, drywall, hollow, particle board (approximately 55mm before reaching the particle board, not sure how thick). I'm at least guessing it's particle board from what I see through the hole. This means that the toggle bolt can't be used, and I'm not quite sure how to proceed from here.
The cabinets have brackets in the form of metal plates, which are what need to be screwed into the wall, to then hang the cabinets on them.
Is it single-layer gypsum or double-layer gypsum (two gypsum boards)?
If you're going to hang cabinets on single-layer gypsum, you can use the type called toggle anchors, or they might have different names.
This type is also available in plastic. But with these, the wall comes along with the cabinet. It holds.
For things that aren't cabinets, like pictures etc., a regular "red plug" and a hole with a 5.5mm drill will suffice....
What you describe as gypsum+chipboard cavity gypsum chipboard.
Sounds like a partition wall.
There should be no problem at all attaching with an expander if the cavity is adequate.
But as I said, find out if it is single gypsum or double gypsum.
No, I mean it's plaster, empty, plaster, empty, chipboard. The cavity isn't large enough, and when I tried using the pliers, it clicked, but it didn't expand. I guess it's simple since it's only one that was drilled through first?

Appreciate the addition for paintings and such! I've been unsure about what's suitable there. Especially after the landlord now doesn't recommend anything that expands (unsure how to secure heavy mirrors, cabinets, etc., but oh well).

If it doesn't expand, it sounds like you have the wrong expander for the thickness of the material.

If you look at the examples of expanders in the picture, you see that one has a longer smooth part, which is probably for double drywall; triple drywall is not so common that it comes with it.
They are usually marked 4E or 4D 5E, 5D, etc., depending on the diameter.
If you have drywall + board, you must use one for double, but it might also be that you need a different type of expander if the board behind the drywall is thicker than the intended length.
But if you have a wooden board behind it, you can screw directly into it.
But one description doesn't sound correct; it's usually not drywall against the stud and wooden board toward the room part.
Instead, it's drywall, wooden board, metal stud.
As mentioned, drill and see what comes out and measure the hole.

The screws are M5, 10Ø x 54mm, the others are about 62mm or something. The shorter ones have already been used for the shelf that's already been put up on the other wall which only had drywall and empty space.
As I said, it's just as I described: Drywall (which seems to be 1.5cm thick), then an empty space of 2cm, then drywall again (which is probably also 1.5cm), then empty space again, then a chipboard. Not wood.
