I would like to use a debarked tree trunk as a post in a construction project. Can I use it with a freshly felled trunk or must it dry first?
In other words, how much can I expect it to shrink in length? The thickness doesn't matter.

What type of wood and will it crack, and what dimensions?
But in most cases, it needs to dry, preferably debarked, leaving several bands around the trunk to hold it together to reduce cracking.

Spruce. Cracks don't matter. But how much can I expect it to shrink in length?

Can't find a dry spruce to use?
Shrinkage along the length of a whole stem is something I've never had to consider, so I'll skip that if it's important for the construction.

It does not become shorter at all. Wood shrinks radially and not along the fibers when it dries.

Here is more information. [link]

In summary, the shrinkage in that direction is marginal.
Thanks!
