We have bought a house from 1904 and plan to open up a wall between the kitchen and living room. It is made of a row of bricks and plaster. Total width 150mm. The wall only has flooring above it and runs parallel to the floor joists. The area to be opened is between an unused chimney breast and an exterior wall and is 2530mm long.

We would like to create as large an opening as possible. The plan is to use L-steel (L-profile/Angle iron) from both sides about 500mm down from the ceiling and then secure these with threaded rods. We will save a small ledge on each side where the L-steel can rest.

The load will then be 50cm of brick and plaster over just over 2 meters (depending on how much needs to be saved on each side).

I have looked at an L-steel with dimensions 100x50x6mm. Is this oversized? I would also like input on how large the ledges need to be.

Grateful for help.
