I have built a deck with a roof on the back of the house and now want to put up "walls" for privacy. I was thinking of using standing råspont (cheap) but I'm not really sure, will there be problems with moisture? The wood should be painted before installation (read that the paint doesn't penetrate all the way into the joint?). Is there anything else one needs to consider regarding råspont? Is there anything else that works? Looked at exterior paneling but it's non-jointed where I shop... I would prefer to avoid gaps!

Best regards

Hi
The color will penetrate to different depths on the raw timber. The rough side absorbs better than the smoother one, but it shouldn't really be a problem. You might have to paint several times if the coverage is poor. As for the tongue and groove, it's obvious that the color won't penetrate there. You must paint the wood before you nail it up.

However, my experience with the raw timber is that it can be quite unattractive with knot holes and the like - especially on the back side. But maybe that doesn't matter?

Råspont is usually quite cheap wood and therefore the best wood is not used for it. Lockpanel might be an option?

Hi, thanks for the responses.

That thing about not being able to reach the tongue with paint, is it really that serious? Otherwise, you could just use a brush if it's that important. And yes, I was planning to paint the wood at least once before it's put up, just a shame the weather is letting me down...it takes forever for the wood to dry.

Regarding knot holes, if you try to sort out the finest boards possible and if you happen to encounter a knot that falls out, can it be fixed? Surely you can glue the knot back, but let's say for some reason it's missing?

After a quick look on Google, the lockpanel seems a bit "overkill", I just live in a rental and don't want to spend too much money, but thanks for the tip!

No, there's nothing dangerous about the paint not soaking in, but it might become streaky. If you paint once before, you fix that problem.

Is it possible to glue knots in place? Well, it should work if you’re lucky enough to have perfectly round holes that have been created.
