tiles on fabric in kitchen?

I am going to tile a kitchen, currently there is painted fabric... can you tile directly on it?

I will of course prime before, I've read a little about that. But all the posts I've found are about laundry rooms.

Mmmm it was tretex.... It won't be easy to attach the kitchen there. But I'll put a layer of plaster on it, and it'll be nice to tile. But for the kitchen, I'll have to try to find the studs.

Yes, but it doesn't help to just find the studs to attach the overhead cabinets, you have to brace between the studs in that case. If you have space to put a plywood/OSB and then gypsum, I would do that.

Yes, but it's not enough to just find the studs to attach the overhead cabinets to; you need to add noggins between the studs if necessary. If you have room to put a plywood/OSB sheet and then gypsum, I would have done that.

I removed all the fabric, now there are several layers of wallpaper behind it. Then it's tretex.

I tried screwing in a couple of screws and they held really well, so the overhead cabinets will sit just fine.

There were cabinets there before.

But is it safe to put tiles on top of all these layers of wallpaper?

Is there any other material than gypsum that you can tile on? That is a dead material?
