Thoughts on opening up to the ridge

I have a small cottage with a hipped roof and I'm considering opening up to the ridge. I'm thinking partly of making a loft over the bedroom. Is it possible when the house has a hipped roof or am I on the wrong track?

What do the trusses look like and how much space do you have in the attic? How is it insulated today?

Today they are insulated with sawdust. Haven't thought much about roof trusses yet, this was a small thought that I started pondering over the weekend, will check the roof trusses when I go there next time.
