thin, durable, preferably dark, board for workbench? or rubber mat.

I've pushed together two industrial workbenches on which I want to place a top to give the impression of one long bench.

Preferably, the top should be dark/black.

But what kind of tops should I be looking for, I wonder. The benches are quite high already, so ideally it shouldn't add too much height.

I could scrape off the two rubber mats and gain 3-4mm... It would be good if I found a suitable mat to replace them with.

What measurements are involved?
Formplywood or Marinplywood perhaps?

the plastic mat is 2mm thick.

Option 1. Find a suitable plastic mat and replace the old ones
Option 2. Place a board on top, in the 5-10mm range..
Option 3. Maybe metal? but it doesn't feel like a fun material to work on..

Underneath is a quite thick wooden board, so this is just about achieving a pleasant surface layer.

A cheap countertop from Ikea or similar?
Otherwise, I'm thinking of formplyfa. It might be a bit soft on the surface if you hit things often.
Maybe 3mm sheet metal 1m around the vise if you have it. Then formplyfa on the rest.
