Almost choked on my dinner when watching "Trädgårdstider" today. Aren't they building it wrong? When they were about to attach the front beam, I noticed they were splicing it in a strange way. (Please correct me if I'm wrong)

The roof trusses are mounted on this front beam. Isn't there a relatively high risk that the beam will break where I have circled it?

Wouldn't it have been better if the beam meets and overlaps 50/50 on the standing beam, right? Person holding a wooden beam joint with a visible notch and arrows drawn, highlighting a concern about structural stability. Drill in the hand, suggesting a DIY project.

Notches in beam ends are not prohibited but must be sized to determine if they hold, as they significantly reduce load-bearing capacity. Notches larger than half should not be made without reinforcements.

Calculation method is available in Eurocode 5 or more easily read in the Glulam Handbook.
