I have a townhouse from the 50s and am trying to put up some eket shelves on a wall in the basement. However, it's really difficult to drill. It reaches a stop and sounds strange. This happens at 4 out of 6 holes. It seems to reach the same depth. I've uploaded a video. Is there something in the wall? What is the problem?

You have the wrong machine and the wrong drill!
Otherwise, just keep at it, if it works, it works.

Is it really a stone/concrete drill bit in the drill? Sometimes a more powerful and heavier drill machine that delivers stronger blows is needed. See Hilti drill machines. They are available for rent, they are expensive professional machines.

Difficult to see clearly on the video, but isn't the machine going the wrong way?

You have probably drilled into rebar.
Is it dangerous/bad in any way?

Try applying a bit more pressure on the drill and keep going for a while. Either you will get through or the drill will break. Worth a try before you start considering going to buy the right kind of drill bit or renting another machine.

  • Black & Decker 600W drill box displaying the red power tool with branding and features listed on the packaging, resting on a gray chair.
Are these types available

  • A hand holding two drill bits of different sizes, with a textured background.

That is a rotary drill, what you need is a hammer drill. Rent/borrow/buy a cheap one from e.g. Biltema, it's sufficient for that.

Exactly, the red Black&Decker is just a lightweight model when it comes to drilling in concrete. It might work if you push hard, but sometimes a proper Hilti hammer drill is needed.

Bosch, Dewalt, Makita, Ryobi, Meec, Biltema etc. with more power and joules in the impact probably do the job satisfactorily as well. For a private person to need to resort to advanced (and expensive) Hilti machines is a clear exaggeration!

Have you activated the hammer when drilling and are you drilling in the right direction?
