Hi,
I want to tear down the walls by my staircase. However, it seems that the staircase is currently attached to my interior walls, which means I can't tear them down. The staircase also doesn't rest significantly on the upper floor's joist as far as I can see.

My idea is to attach the staircase to the joist and install posts to support the staircase. Modern staircases seem to use this solution, although the design might be different.

Does anyone have any input? I also plan to send some questions to a staircase company but would like a bit more information first.

I made a quick sketch showing how I want to do it.

  • Diagram of a staircase design showing intended support from the beam and posts, with highlighted fixation points within a surrounding wall structure.
  • Sketch of a staircase construction plan showing beams and potential supports for securing the staircase to the ceiling joist.
  • 3D sketch of a stair design concept, showing wooden beams, support posts, and connection to a wall, illustrating a proposed renovation plan.

It depends on the dimensions of the vangstycken whether it's enough to attach it to the ceiling joists above and then have supports/legs in the corners. Our upcoming staircase will be attached to the upper ceiling joists, have the vangstycke for the upper run attached to the wall (partly to avoid sway, partly to be able to "pull in" the staircase towards the wall) but have the opposing corners and middle supported by posts. The manufacturer said that it won't need to be attached to the wall at all, it can be freestanding, just in the ceiling joists above and then in the floor on the lower level.

Thank you for the response, then I will demolish more so I can measure the dimension and have it on hand when I ask the stair company.
