I have decided to renovate my small studio apartment of 30sqm and would like to get some tips on how to go about it (I'm really all thumbs, so bear with me ). I want to start by removing a doorway I have from the hallway into the living room/common room to get a more "open" floor plan. There's a radiator on the wall I want to take down, which might complicate things. The idea is for the wall with the radiator to be completely removed so that the hallway continues straight into the apartment, so to speak. I believe the wall is some form of lightweight concrete.
In what order should I do everything? Is it:
1. Contact landlord for permission to remove radiator
2. Plumber to remove it
3. Builder to demolish wall?
It is probably a good idea in all contexts to "settle in" for a while before starting to demolish and change things. (Of course, I don’t know how long you have lived in the apartment.)
And yes, there is probably a lot of useful reading here, with all sorts of orientations.
Strange, by the way, that there isn't any "apartment-specific" section. For those of you with laundry room notices and strollers in the hallway
There are many apartment dwellers here reading and writing as we have many common interests (kitchens, for example), but many differences as well.
If you're going to check with the landlord if it's okay to remove the radiator, you should probably check with him if it's okay to remove the wall as well.
If it is a rental apartment, you should check with the property owner regardless of what you intend to change, even if it's as little as wallpapering or repainting...
It is not at all certain that the property owner will even let you re-wallpaper...
If it is a condominium, you can at least change surface layers without asking, but larger changes (e.g., tearing down a wall) must be approved by the association.
