We have a load-bearing wall with vertical timber about 4 meters that we want to remove. We have been in contact with a consultant+carpenter, but have not yet received a price.

What is reasonable to pay for this? We don't need any "tidying up"/removal or similar, just help to cut up the wall and install a beam.

Anyone...?

It's usually better to be two people for such jobs. Stamping off can be heavy/complex alone. You might consider offering to be an assistant yourself. But I find it hard to imagine it would take more than a day, if it’s just about stamping, cutting the hole, and placing the beam. I did the same thing myself (3m standing timber) with a friend in one evening. It probably didn’t take more than 2-3 hours. But you should probably count on a full day for transport, bringing in the tools etc.

Attaching some pictures I got from the consultant. However, these are based on the assumption that it was horizontal timber and that one could leave one round to avoid conversion.

How much does one pay for an hour of work? 500 including VAT, approximately? So that means we're talking about 4000 for one person, or at worst 8000 kr if I can't be the handyman. How much do you think one would have to spend on the beam itself?

This is how I did it myself. The girl, however, held up the beam on one side when I lifted the whole thing there.

  • Building project with beams being installed on a wall; a hydraulic jack and wooden planks are visible on the floor.
  • A wooden stud wall under construction with a panel leaning against it; tools and materials scattered on the floor.
