There are superficial cracks in the new concrete staircase that appear when it has rained. Is it supposed to look like this or is something wrong? The staircase was cast last fall. The cracks are not visible when it's dry.

  • Concrete steps with visible surface cracks after rainfall. The cracks are not noticeable when dry.
  • Cracks on surface of a concrete step leading to a front door, visible after rain.
The concrete has dried too quickly when you were casting. This causes these small shrinkage cracks. It's not dangerous structurally, but water can find its way in and it can cause frost damage if you're unlucky.

thanks for the response, it was a company that poured the staircase for me. Is it something I should complain about? It wasn't exactly cheap...

Depends on whether you were told to water afterwards or if they were supposed to take care of the aftercare.
