Hi, I'm building a new house and if you look at many newly built houses, it seems they have missed the point about suitable placement for the garbage bin. "Back" in the day, you would have a metal cabinet in the garage (see image). It's actually quite good instead of the green bin at the curb.

How have you solved this?

  • Metal cabinet in a garage used for trash storage, with a handle and ventilation holes, contrasting with modern outdoor bins by sidewalks.
Anyone who has the trash can in a good spot and is satisfied with it?!
How have you solved this?

Not yet, but in a few weeks I'll have a mini carport for it if all goes as planned.

Extremely simple construction. Cast slab at a maximum of 1X1 meter. Post shoes, 45X45 frame, and vertical paneling up to barrel height. No roof. The idea is just for it to stay in place if it's windy when it's empty. Today, it stands outside.

Thank you mats_o.
Is there anyone who has built a garage and enclosed it like in the picture on a new construction, or how is it solved nowadays if you don't want it visible in the carport or by the sidewalk?

The thing you have to keep in mind if you really build it a bit up from the street is that you have to remember to take it out before the garbage truck comes, otherwise it won't be emptied. Unless you have very kind garbage collectors in your area.

Borrowing the thread a bit. Besides the trash can, you also have a lot of other things. Does anyone have a good solution for sorting return cans, paper, and glass at or in your houses? It would also be interesting to see.

I am planning to build a small shed by the road. The plan is to have a small door for the trash can, and a slightly larger one for bikes and car stuff like the pressure washer, winter tires, garage jack, etc. The plan is for the shed to be about 2x3 m at the short end of my parking space (due to the hilly terrain, I don't have the possibility for a garage, so I only have a "slot" for the car).

As for returnables like glass, we have a large "chest" with plastic boxes on the porch. It's good to sit on, and when we need to empty newspapers or glass, I take the whole plastic box in the car.
