From a sustainability perspective, the weight of the tabletop is not particularly problematic, as long as the structure is not disrupted by forces in any direction other than downward. The problem to be solved, therefore, is how to ensure that the table doesn't collapse like a parallelogram when someone moves the chair in and accidentally bumps the table with their stomach.
I believe that really solid dowels from the sides into relatively thick legs are the way to go. Just like in the picture. It takes quite a bit of hubris to think you can do better than this type of construction, with which tables have been made for many generations.
The alternative, as mentioned above, is to make the base in metal. My parents' purchased table has such a construction. However, this requires that one can work with metal.
I would prefer to work with wood. Partly because it is easier and partly because I think it looks nicer. If I were to do as in the picture, how would the construction look from underneath?
Is it enough to make a frame as in the picture, or should I place a thin MDF board on the frame that is slightly smaller than the granite slab and then place the slab on top, essentially like making a table but then placing the granite slab on top?
Sufficient with a wooden frame and legs like the table above. I think the biggest problem is making the corners stable. I assume it will be something like 4 granite slabs `a 900x600. I would have used 70x70mm for the frame and possibly 100x100mm for the legs (aesthetically).

The slab should be 2400x900, not four pieces. I will order from the same supplier who is fixing my kitchen counter.
