The staircase in the house is old (and we can't afford a new one.) However, there's nothing seriously wrong with it, we've reinforced it so it's sturdy and has become more even, it even creaks minimally. The staircase consists of beadboard under the risers; we noticed this when we tore off the thin brown sheets that were there before. We're starting to find the beadboard a bit charming and are considering keeping it instead of covering it up.

The plan is to sand down and repaint the staircase. Would it be fun to go with a different color than white? We're thinking about giving the beadboard one color and the risers a white/stained finish.

What would you do? Anyone have a fun suggestion for us? :) Otherwise, the house is old-fashioned and we like to preserve old doors, etc., for charm's sake.

Disregard the last image! It was a bit wrong!

Hello,

It's nice that you want to keep the old staircase. I would probably choose opaque paint and the same color for the treads and risers. I think that suits an old staircase better. The color is probably best chosen depending on what color you will have on the walls. Otherwise, it's very stylish to paint old woodwork gray.

Very beautiful staircase. Paint with linseed oil paint and as mentioned, gray is a classic and beautiful color for older woodwork. Mix white with green umbra to achieve a softly warm gray color.

Thanks for the amazing tips! Now it almost feels obvious to paint the stairs in the same color and preferably gray. I've googled some pictures and realize exactly that old-fashioned feeling :)
The question is how the walls should be to give a nice impression... painted, wallpapered, or paneled - and which color/pattern?

"Mix white with green umber" sounded like a good idea - do these two colors become grayish together? I'm not so good with colors but will ask for advice at the paint store! A warmer gray color feels a bit nicer.

Wouldn't it look nice with paneling halfway up the wall following the angle of the stairs? It might depend a bit on what's in the hallway downstairs too. I think wainscoting looks nice in old houses.
