Talked to a structural engineer about our house project today. He claimed that you must have angled studs, so-called diagonal braces, in all exterior walls to ensure sufficient stabilization of the frame. He argued that exterior gypsum would just crack if used for frame stabilization.

Looking at frame assemblies like this one from Fiskarhedenvillan, there are no diagonal braces anywhere.

How should one think? If you search for diagonal bracing, almost only half-timbered houses come up...
I understand that you should brace diagonally during the construction process, but once the gypsum is mounted, it should be sufficiently stable, right?

At the same time, you don't want the house to be able to blow over :)

Considering the mistake in the latest house dreams, shouldn't their problem have been avoidable if the walls had been diagonally braced?
 
Normally, plaster is sufficient for frame stabilization. You usually have an inner board as well.

I assume the structural engineer will be handling your construction documents. Ask them how many boards are required. They should be able to answer that!

I might choose another structural engineer. This one had many other funny ideas, but since I haven't seen any solution with diagonal braces in new houses, I became very doubtful.

I will have a multi-layer wall where the inner wall will not have any physical contact with the outer. But you would think that an intermediate exterior gypsum board as wind protection should suffice on the outside, where you'll nail studs for the outer insulation layer.

But do you mean that maybe he's not entirely wrong? He did say that it wouldn't have worked if you used an inner gypsum board after a cross-laid installation layer...

Perhaps he wasn't used to calculating on double-layer walls ...? :)

I don't think you need any additional structural stabilization on the inside. On the other hand, it doesn't hurt either if you put two perforated metal straps in a cross on each outer wall.

Because it's not needed, in a normal case, for small houses.
However, it's not at all uncommon with braces in large buildings with steel frames. Rather almost always.
 
I would suspect that the inner board provides limited stability if there are crossed studs (often 45x45) between the boards and the stud frame. Today, one often does not use any outer gypsum, but just a windbreaker on the outside, before paneling with nail battens, etc. Then I assume that one must have bracing. One also often uses metal strapping, crossed for stability. However, I don't know if that's enough to exclude the bracing.
 
In terms of construction, diagonal braces are number 1. It's never wrong.
It is probably for practical reasons that diagonal braces have been abandoned. The aim is to minimize assembly time.

I believe there should be galvanized metal strip (2 x 20 mm) that can be used as a replacement? (crossed)
