Now it has been too long since I was in school, so I need a little assistance. Is there better or worse strength in a beam that is 45 * 190 (hypothetical measurement, I know) compared to placing two 45 * 95 next to each other (i.e., 90 * 95)? We have a bit of a tight space from the ground.

Don't quite remember, but the strength increases with the square of the height. That is, 4 times with double height. A significant difference, indeed.

You need b180xh95 to correspond to a b45xh190.
What are you going to build?

Thanks for the response. I suspected that it couldn't have the same high strength. It's going to be a ground-level deck, but we can fit in 170 joists anyway.
