I am in the process of renovating an existing garage and am considering if/how the existing W-trusses would need to be reinforced to use the attic as a proper (insulated) storage space and perhaps even an installation space for, for example, an air compressor?
The existing trusses have a 6m span and the top and bottom chords are built with structural timber C24 45x120 with nail plates at all joints (including the splice in the bottom chord) according to the sketch. The roof is made of tongue-and-groove boards and concrete tiles. The maximum distance between the trusses is 1.2m (the outer ones). The inner ones are closer at 1.0m.
Does anyone have experience with similar projects?
These trusses are way too weak to support anything other than the roof. Exceptionally, some skis, boards, and similar items. Possibly even a compressor, depending on its size. So to furnish something and use it somewhat normally, they must be reinforced.
I agree with AG A. The trusses are too weak. The simplest solution might be to insert 45x220 beams between the trusses and then lay a floor on top of these with 11/2 inch tongue-and-groove boards as flooring and leave the trusses as they are.
Now it probably won't be a matter of heavier stuff up there I assume because the ceiling height is likely to be low, it will probably rather be a question of crawl space height. With a wooden floor on that, it should be possible to store some things there.
My thoughts were along those lines as well... we'll see if there will be a separate floor joist or if I scrap the storage idea entirely and just put up ceiling gypsum + lighting.
