Stanley stud finder - how to get it to work??

I have purchased a Stanley S100 stud finder which is supposed to find both studs and electrical wires behind plaster and wood panels. According to the seller, it is very easy to use - the problem is that I can't get the device to work. Can anyone provide guidance on how to proceed??

Hello and in the video it's just as easy to find the stud as the seller said. My stud finder continuously lights/beeps and in no way indicates that it found a stud. The included instruction manual is completely incomprehensible to me...

The wall I am examining is drywall on studs so I know there are studs.

I have gotten much better results with a strong magnet than with the stud finder (which, admittedly, is not Stanley's). A magnet finds the nail heads easily and elegantly.

Borrowed one when I was supposed to drill a hole for ventilation in the living room. Started inside, drilled straight into a stud, after a few curses went outside and tested on the outside, same thing there. Straight into another stud.
So now I have a nice 100mm hole in the wall both outside and inside.

Have been the proud owner of a useless stud finder for just about 24 hours. Went back with it today and got my money back.

Last night I took out a strong magnet and solved the problem quickly and painlessly. The studs are found, so now it's time to close the thread and start working again.

I read somewhere that it can interfere if you touch the wall with your body at the same time. So try to just hold the viewfinder and not touch the wall otherwise.
