Stair material

I am thinking of constructing a staircase on my own and am now wondering if laminated material, like wooden countertops, can be used for this?
Anyone with knowledge or experience of this?

There are 40mm countertops in various materials. That should work. The only difference might be that the stair material is glued with whole planks. No short joints of the planks, in other words.
