Hello, we are in the process of remodeling our interior staircase. As a "guard" on the side of the staircase, we have installed 19mm upright metal pipes with a center-to-center distance of 10cm. Now that it's finished, I find these hollow lacquered metal pipes a bit too flexible; I would have preferred them to be sturdier.
Where can one buy solid round rods, preferably with a brushed stainless steel appearance, in dimensions of about 20mm in diameter? What would this cost per meter roughly?
What type of vendor would have something like that?
Best regards,
Pagge

The handrail, when it is in place, will also stabilize everything. Try that first, before you buy new solid (=expensive) bars.
A suitable handrail is a rectangular 40 x 90 mm with rounded edges with or without a grip track. A round handrail is also possible, but it's a hassle to drill unless you have a special jig for this.

If you are willing to increase the dimension slightly, for example to 25 mm pipes, you will get significantly more bending stiffness for the money. Going from 19mm pipes to 19mm solid bars doesn't make much difference in bending stiffness (+63%), but going from 19 to 25mm pipes gives 87% higher bending resistance. 19mm solid bars cost about twice as much as 25x2mm pipes per meter!
Just a small post...

Thanks for the answers!
I actually hadn't planned to have a support on that side; it'll be on the other side where there is a wall.
Sure, I can very well go up to 25mm. A problem is that I'm not really sure where to buy these things; the 19mm pipes I'm using now are some kind of curtain rods in lacquered grey metal, but I would prefer some pipes that look like brushed steel.

You can find stainless steel pipes at a well-stocked hardware store (the few that are left) or at a mechanical workshop. If you're lucky, you can even find nice pipes at the scrapyard.
:-[ Just realized now that I misread your first post. I read dealer as rail, hence my rambling about rails in my first reply. An occupational hazard, probably. ;D
