We have a TV stand that is really worn out thanks to the kids playing on it with cars, horses, etc.

Now we're renovating the living room and want to replace the worn and ugly (although only 4 years old) TV stand with a new one. Ideally, we want it to be a bit more durable too :)

It will be an IKEA (of course) and their materials aren't always the most durable and wear-resistant. Is it possible to... spray some clear coat or something that gives a slightly harder surface on top of the TV stand? One that maybe isn't visible with a bit of luck? We don't want a cloudy surface or anything...

I'm thinking maybe then it would withstand passing cars, planes, action figures, etc. You don't want to exile the kids from the living room or have them live in a dollhouse where you can't touch anything. At the same time, you don't want to shell out a couple of thousand on a new TV stand every other year either :P
