I watched a building show the other night, some Norwegians renovating a cabin in the mountains where they laid probably painted tongue-and-groove boards as the outer roof, on battens and purlins. With a proper roof underneath, of course, with felt and everything.
But how does it work in the long run? It looked really stylish...
