Hello,
I'm considering building a pergola over a deck.

Since the deck is 6m long and I would preferably like to have the posts (2 pieces of 45x95 per post) supporting the frame (45x195mm?) at the outer corners, and I want to avoid a center post, I wonder if it is possible to join two beams into one long piece that goes between the posts. If so, which joining method is preferred? And is it better to join in the middle of the span or near a post?

The short sides are about 4m and on top of the frame, I plan to place about 25 beams (45x95) lengthwise (short side to short side) with a carrying beam in the middle. This carrying beam will also load the joined beam.

Feasible?

Grateful for tips!

See if you can find a glulam beam with longer dimensions... unsupported joints are never good.

e.g.: https://www.bauhaus.se/limtrabalk-gran-42x180x6000mm.html

In that case, you must treat it somehow, stain or iron sulfate or paint...

Even though in the case of the pergola there might not be such a big load, it should at least carry its own weight without sagging over time... and it looks crooked if it starts to bend a couple of cm.
