The span table on the wood guide shows that 45x220mm floor joists can handle spans of up to 7m with a center support underneath.

I need to cover a span of 7.5 meters. It probably would have worked with 45x220mm, it just would have flexed a bit more.

I was at the sawmill today and asked, and unfortunately, he didn't have as many long 2"9 (45x220mm planed) as I needed, nor any higher dimensions. However, he had quite a lot of 3"8. How large spans can 3"8 handle?

Perhaps 8 m., it is approximately 14% stronger.

Haha, got an email saying there were replies in the thread "Maybe 6 m., it is about 14% weaker." Thought "What?! I thought it would be stronger than 2"9!

But now it says it is stronger, which aligns more with my own feeling (which is completely unfounded :) )

You seem to have a handle on this peternicklas. How did you calculate it is 14% stronger?

Just calculated the moment of inertia, B*H*H*H/12, and compared the 2 different beams.
