I am planning to renovate a space and want to include a sound-absorbing ceiling. It doesn't need to insulate sound against the surroundings, the idea is to dampen sound within the room where it occurs. Since the ceiling is being changed, it feels wrong to install gypsum and then something to dampen, it would be better to find ceiling panels that dampen better than gypsum. The ceiling should be dark/black and I don't have very high requirements for appearance.

What would be suitable?

If you have good suggestions for soundproofing to apply to lightweight concrete walls, suggestions for that are welcome too :)

Are you going to reduce the reverberation? What is generating the sound in the room? There is a certain difference between speech, music, or whatever it may be.

Should muffle (dull) the thud of a golf ball hitting a screen. Reduce the sound in the room, not towards the surroundings.

Ohh that nut. Quite low frequencies. Try rolling up two foam mattresses and place them in the corners behind the screen.

Not so far yet. Going to have a new ceiling and thinking there should be something more suitable than gypsum to dampen the sound in the room.

Google acoustic panels. There is a whole range available for ceilings and walls.

Mmmm.... I can promise you I have done that. As you say, there are lots, but it's not easy to know what is suitable. That's why I'm asking here, as there tends to be a wealth of knowledge.

Oh..If I had enough Headroom in my basement, I would have also built a Golf studio😀
If so, I would probably proceed like this:
- Floor = Installed thick carpets. Possibly with step cushioning underneath.
- Ceiling = Glued up dark Foam or Fabric absorbers in the ceiling + a loose/pleated dark curtain attached so there is a bit of air in between. (Can also function as a "catch net" for uncontrolled balls).
- Walls = Mounted thick Sound curtains/drapes on tracks.
- Used Supersoft Golf balls😉
Price is always a factor regarding Absorbent material, so Amazon and Temu are a bit cheaper

Use rockphon or ecophon ceilings. They reduce reflections and reverberation time. The impact and ball bounce differ quite a bit.
The higher frequency from the impact goes towards the screen and it should handle those reflections. The corners around the screen can certainly give a certain clap echo.
You should address the ball bounce at the source. That is, dampen the area around the screen.
Behind you, one can also have panels to diffuse the sound.
I have no idea about the height, width, and length ratio in the room either. That can also cause issues.
Hard floors will also result in longer reverberation times.
