Hello!

I have a strange smell in a room that resembles a stable/horse. Nothing "pungent" but puzzling. The previous owners have laid new click flooring and covered the fine 100-year-old pine flooring, but I wonder if it's trätex or masonite that's smelling? No mold smell - but more like old man/horse/stable. And only in one room.

The room is on the north side, but the adjacent room has no smell at all. However, it doesn't have click flooring or anything covering the wood paneling on the walls.

Has anyone else encountered this? Advice and tips before I tear the darn thing apart.

you need to find the problem. could be basically anything from pests to plumbing

Could be old treetex boards.

Guessing treetex as well.
The smell of horse would only be a plus for me. :)

You should walk around and sniff to see if you can locate the source of the smell. Wall or floor?

Thanks for the quick replies:

I agree that it could be just about anything. However, it is precisely localized in just that room. Sewage and the like would have spread - including mold. However, it tends towards some material used in that room. Of course, it's cozy with horses :) but I'd rather not have that scent in the room. I've sniffed the floor/walls and they don't smell - it's the air in the room. It's like an air wall (right at the door). It disappears when you air out but returns.

I suspect, as mentioned, masonite/Trätex or similar since it's only that room that's "renovated" (if you can call hiding everything nicely with the house a renovation).

The strange thing was the stable/horse smell. I've never even heard of a material/house odor issue smelling like that. And not that it's localized to just one spot either. I think it was properly renovated (and not just painted over) in the late 60s judging by beer cans in the foundation (which look okay).

I guess I'll have to tear out and take a look at what's hiding. Thanks for the quick replies! I'll report back once it's sorted - I just wanted to double-check if anyone knew anything about that specific scent...

Hi Vinnie!

How did it end? What did you find? Did you solve the problem?
I have the same issue, it smells like a horse stable in the house.

Hey!

I tore down a bit of the walls, and sure enough, there were old wood chipboards (I guess trätex). However, much of the indoor smell disappeared after I fixed the indoor ventilation as well as the masonry (holes/blocking)/drainage outdoors. I'll completely tear down the interior walls, but that will be a later project. As I said, many small steps solved the problem for me.

Take care!

Thanks for the reply!
I have investigated my old hut and found some tretex in certain walls, but not where it smells. However, there might be a gypsum board placed in front of the tretex since it seems to be scattered here and there throughout the house. Hopefully, that's the problem, as it's quite tiresome to hunt down and guess where the smell might be coming from.

Hello, did you find what was causing the smell in your place? We just installed coffee wide oak laminate flooring from Rusta throughout the apartment and painted the walls with their wall paint, but in one bedroom it now smells like a stable, and we can't get rid of the smell.

Unfortunately not, but I suspect moisture. I aired out and heated the room a bit more, then used Kjell & Company's ozone generator for a few days. After that, the smell disappeared. But I suspect moisture with glue/wood.

Yes, I did find the culprit in the end. I tore up the entire floor and found pieces of old white-painted board that were emitting the smell even though they were dry and fine. Very unexpected. It looked like the board was used to level the floor in my old uneven summer cottage.
