I have a sleeper staircase as shown in the picture, approximately 12m long. Is there anyone who sells sleepers in these dimensions? The ones I find are much thinner. These were laid in the 90s.
A wooden sleeper staircase from the 1990s with moss and greenery on the steps, surrounded by lush bushes. A hand measuring a weathered wooden sleeper on an outdoor staircase with green foliage surrounding it. Hand measuring moss-covered railway sleeper outdoors.

This could be genuine railway sleepers. They were popular for garden projects for a while. They contain creosote and should be handled as hazardous waste. I don't think they can be sourced anymore, and what is offered is construction timber from the builders' merchants, thinner, yes, and probably not as durable. Perhaps you should consider another stair solution?

They were built in the '90s and are already quite attacked, probably not creosote.

My father built a staircase out of old worn-out railway sleepers in the early '70s, which started to deteriorate in the mid-2000s. It was replaced with similar "sleepers" like the one in the picture from TS, which is essentially just heavily impregnated timber. It doesn't last as long as original sleepers, but roughly as long as used sleepers.

Here is an example:

You can probably get them at your nearest building supply store if you ask them to order it in.

Does anyone know a company that does work along the railway? They're usually not impossible when they're looking to get rid of older sleepers from switches.

Wooden sleepers should be handled according to very clear procedures, and if the "company" releases wooden sleepers, they are committing both environmental and contractual violations. So it is not recommended.

The sleepers that cannot be recycled in the railway installation go to special facilities for destruction.

Also check if you can improve the drainage under the stairs. No wood, no matter how well impregnated, does well lying directly in water.

If they last 35 years as they are now, they are ok 👍
