I am going to build a small "home workshop." It will be located in the countryside, so the area is not zoned. To be able to handle some longer items, I need all the height I can get, and therefore I will place a glulam beam along the ridge of the gabled roof. The building will be 8.0 x 4.0 m. Roof pitch 3:4 (about 37 degrees). The building will be insulated, so the dimensions of the rafters will be 45x195 with c/c 1.2 m. Roof covering of felt. Some form of simple boards or tongue and groove planks on the inside of the roof. Now to my question. What dimensions should I have for the glulam beam? Unfortunately, I cannot have any pillar/post as an intermediate support for the beam, so the span will be 8 m.
