I am calculating and sketching a fairly large carport and am unsure about my own calculations as this is new to me. The conditions are that I want a flat roof (3 degrees) to be able to build a patio on top, and the height of the structure must be kept low. Therefore, I have considered a ridge beam to support the whole thing. The size is 7m long with a span of 8m, and here the problems come in - according to my calculations, it becomes a large beam if you want to avoid supports apart from the ends.

For glulam, I ended up with 115x495 and with a steel beam, I ended up at an HEA280. Then, I calculated with a snow load of 2.0kN/m2 and a dead load of 0.5kN/m2.

Is this reasonable, or could it work with a more slender beam?

I hope someone with knowledge and a feel for this can give some advice. :)

This is not a rule question. Moving to construction technology.
