Hello!

We are renovating and we want to open up/widen a doorway in a part of a load-bearing wall. No major interventions are to be done, just a post that needs to be moved about 700 mm to the left. Does this need reinforcement and how is it done most easily in that case?

The wall measures 3300 mm.

Edit: The opening will be 600 from the chimney and will measure approximately 160 in span.

If you make a larger opening in a load-bearing wall, it needs to be reinforced. The height and width of the beam and the thickness of the columns it rests on are determined, for example, by the snow zone, roof construction, weight from the floor structure, and what is on the floor above. Therefore, you should contact a structural engineer who can calculate suitable dimensions based on such information. The information from the structural engineer needs to be attached to the building notification that the municipality typically requires before the work begins.
