Repointing my chimney and I think the sheet metal work looks strange. The gray-colored sheet metal was covered with some sealant in the same red color as the sheet metal. When the sealant comes off, water can run straight down into the sheet metal construction. Is it supposed to be this way?

In the middle of the picture. Unfortunately, poor resolution so zooming doesn't help much to see details. Maybe I'll take a better picture tomorrow then.

He's obviously not done yet?

Gray-green on the backside of the metal sheet

So this was done at least 30 years ago. What I'm wondering is if it is done correctly. Encasing the chimney and then adding joint compound? (The joint compound covered everything that is gray)

Solved it with a bit of home tin smithing.
