For some reason, we have edge elements around our concrete slab at the entrance, which complicates things as we try to tidy it up. The goal is something like the white slab in the picture. You can use leveling compound on top of the concrete, but how should you handle the edge and the insulation? I suppose there's a high risk of cracking?

  • Concrete slab with edges, broom, flowers, bicycle, and gray door at entrance; surrounded by gravel.
  • Concrete entrance slab with edge elements, white house, black double door, gravel path, plants in pots, and a broom leaning on the wall.
  • A modern white house entrance with planters, a canopy, and a concrete slab.
I would cut out the insulation, put in a reinforcement, and cast with some fine concrete.

You can scrape down into the styrofoam at the edge so that you keep the cement board intact on the outside, that way you get a slightly thicker and more durable edge all around.
Just make sure that the filler or casting you intend to do is suitable for outdoors and frost-resistant 😊

Thank you! Would an alternative be to build a mold that extends 1-2cm from the edges and rises 1-2cm higher than the slab and simply cast both the edges and top of a board? Is there a high risk of it cracking when it's so thin? What type of concrete would you use? Preferably, I would not make the slab smaller by removing the edge elements.

Well, 1-2 cm is too weak if you're going to cast outside the L-element, so it needs to be reinforced together with what you are going to cast on top of it.
And then a thicker casting is needed.
What do you have against cutting away the element itself?
