We are building a glass veranda for our turn-of-the-century house. We have now removed the old panel from a former exterior wall which will now become an interior wall in the glass veranda. Under the panel, we found a wall of horizontal planks/logs that have been sealed with, among other things, juteväv and a mixture of something reddish. We are now a bit curious about what this reddish material might be, if it contains any unhealthy substances that might not be good for the air inside our house? Looks like some kind of sealant or joint/silicone. Is it rock-hard? When could this have been done approximately, modern times?

We believe this is original from 1904 because it was under the tar paper layer + really old panel that was attached with wrought nails. The red joint is rock hard and is brushed on all the sawn end-pieces. Suspect that faluröd pigment is involved or something else iron-based. We have sawn into interior walls in the house and there's nothing like that there.
