I have a terrace (with railing around) that is located above an insulated entrance area in my cottage (which was built in 1935). Currently, there is only a layer of roofing felt on wooden decking on the terrace structure (which is the same as the roof of the entrance area) and during snowmelt (with 1m of snow melting from below), there is a lot of standing water, leading to subsequent problems with water leakage into the entrance area. The water likely enters through punctures in the waterproofing layer at the railing attachments, or the felt has degraded from foot traffic and/or UV radiation over the years.

I am now planning to rebuild the entrance area and want to create a completely watertight construction. What options are available for waterproofing, and what is best, cheapest, and easiest to apply? How do you handle details such as the attachment of the terrace railing without puncturing the waterproofing?

Grateful if anyone can link to good products with installation instructions! [have searched but can't find good descriptions]

A roof with a 7-degree slope and roofing felt installed according to the manufacturer's instructions works excellently.
You can advantageously lay a decking floor on top of the roof later, as flooring for the terrace.

All building stores sell roofing felt systems that are "DIY" and work well if installed according to instructions.

Otherwise, a welded rubber membrane or welded roofing felt is more watertight but probably completely overkill for your porch since you have the possibility to create a simpler roof pitch on it. It is the penetrations for roof drainage that leak first in a flat construction.
