When a little snow came, it became quite easy to see where the mice were getting in...

The question is whether one can seal this with something permanent now that it's cold?
 
The simplest way is probably a ball with chicken wire and filled with outdoor sealant. The best is to mix some cement and fix it there. However, the mice will still come in, so feed them rat poison outside the house and maybe they'll lose the incentive to come inside for warmth...)
