Sand painted concrete staircase

Hello,
I have a painted concrete staircase at my house that needs renovation due to some cracks, etc., but how do I go about sanding off the old paint? I am planning to paint the staircase again when I'm done with a waterproof paint but I need to sand off the old worn paint first.
