I am in the process of moving a bathroom and have simultaneously torn up the ceiling because there was water damage in it.
To ensure that what I was doing was correct, I hired an inspector.
He said I should reinforce the joist I show pictures of below by placing a 45x195 joist parallel to this one and screwing them together with one screw at the top and one at the bottom every 50cm.
Now that I was about to proceed, I removed some insulation in the attic and it turned out that the existing joist goes from being completely straight to being twisted about 45 degrees where it rests on its support.
What do I do now?
It's not going to be easy to screw my new joist to the one that has twisted.

Here it is spliced with another joist, which was done when the dormer was built (presumably in the 1950s)
I don't dare to attempt to take down the twisted rule to replace it.
The tip with the clamp sounded interesting.
I might start by attaching the clamp at the very end... take a pipe and place it on the clamp to get a good lever, and then try to straighten the rule before placing the new one against it?!?
With some sturdy bolts, it should be possible to pull together the twisted beam with a new reinforcement beam. The problem is that you generally don't want to "twist back" the old beam too much since it might disturb the rest of the construction which has settled with the current shape of the beam. It depends on what is resting on it, I can't really see that in the pictures. Generally, old timber tends to be much stronger (tight-grained, lots of heartwood) than new, which suggests that a new beam is more malleable than the old one. On the other hand, good timber typically doesn't twist that much.
