I have a room in the basement where I have knocked off all the plaster, thereby exposing concrete hollow blocks (two walls) and lecablock. Now plastering remains. Is there an easy way to do this yourself? We have some cracks in the exterior walls, so according to two masons I've spoken to, the exterior walls should be meshed. Since one of the masons has provided a cost estimate that was quite expensive (close to 20,000 SEK for 24 m² of wall), I wonder if it's fairly easy to replaster yourself? I would be very grateful for tips on how to do it. Also, any tips on how to fix the mesh and what type of mesh it involves.

  • Cracked concrete block walls in a basement, showing exposed surfaces needing plastering.
  • Basement room with exposed concrete and cinder block walls, a broom, and a light bulb on. Debris and tools are scattered on the floor.
Attach chicken wire by bending nails and then plaster over it. There's likely help on how to plaster on the net or at your hardware store. Not particularly difficult (the hard part is making it look nice) but you'll probably need to rent a concrete mixer as it would be tough to mix so much in a bucket.

But do you really need to wire? Haven't the walls settled?

I would probably have aimed for welded mesh instead if I were to set up netting. That, a couple of boxes of nail plugs, and wire should do the trick. If the walls are straight, it should go fairly quickly and should be doable for most who are somewhat handy. It might be smart to plan if you will have electrical conduits, etc., running in the wall.
