Working on one of the farm buildings. Rotten pillars that support the roof need to be replaced. 130x130 thick.

I have solid ones lying around, but with "large" longitudinal cracks. Doesn't feel professional to use them.

Went to the store and they suggested glulam, which I then have to treat for outdoor use. Price just under 800 SEK.

Would you choose glulam for this? Feels a bit uncertain to use for an outdoor building.

Are the cracks so large that they jeopardize the load-bearing capacity of the logs? There are almost always cracks in old timber.

Some had more, others less. All had the entire way. If I then burden with an overlying log, or even two, I am concerned that the weight might start a slow splitting process.

If it was just to bear weight straight up in the middle of a space, but in this case, it is at a gable corner, where there can be more movement and several details on top of the pillar.
