Hello.

We are tearing up an old subfloor to straighten the joists and lay a new floor. There is a staircase railing that complicates things a bit. I plan to tear up the old floor and railing. Screw in a temporary railing to the side post and secure it to the joists for safety while I level the floor. When I then lay the floor, the question is how to do it best. Can you lay the subfloor up to the railing (wide joists so there's space) so that the railing remains directly against the joists, or should you remove the railing, lay the subfloor, and then screw the railing back in place? The thing is that this temporary railing will likely be there for a while until a more permanent railing is installed, and you don't want to unnecessarily perforate the subfloor or joists too much. Will it cause problems when installing a new railing if the floor doesn't extend all the way out?
